JEAN-CLAUDE GOBÉ FEARS THAT THE CITY OF LAVAL’S POLICE SERVICE WILL BE UNABLE TO ACT IN CASE OF MASS SHOOTING, KILLING OR TERRORIST ACT

Laval, October 22nd, 2017 – The Leader of the Official Opposition and mayoral candidate, Jean-Claude Gobé, is concerned that the Laval Police Service may not be ready to act in the event of a mass shooting, killing or terrorist act: due to lack of police force. Referring to the September 20th shooting during a soccer match, reported by Fanny Lévesque in La Presse on Sunday:

“Our police force is insufficient, people have heard the bullets whistle and the police arrived 34 minutes after the first call,” he denounced, “this is a very serious situation and Marc Demers did nothing to ensure the safety of the citizens ! “.

34 minutes for the Laval police to go to the scene of the shooting

“I find, along with Mr. Maida, owner of the soccer league TotalCampo, that this long wait is inconceivable,” said Jean-Claude Gobé, “for 34 minutes, there would have been no one to stop the shooter “.

For Jean-Claude Gobé, the Laval police service is not able to act in the event of a shooting, killing or terrorist act: “As I said before, we live in a globalized society and Laval is a metropolitan city, as the third largest city in Quebec, we must be ready to intervene in any situation”.

Laval will become the safest city in Quebec

To ensure the safety of Laval residents, Action Laval is reiterating its commitments announced last week. Jean-Claude Gobé is committed to:

– Double the police force in the evening and at night;

– Install a new police station in the West of Laval, to better serve this sector of Laval and to relieve others;

– Review the different emergency plans;

– Set up a program to prevent attacks by setting up an intelligence service.

“I am going to put an end to the sloppiness and amateurism of Marc Demers, we must act, I will act! “, he declared.

A review of the emergency and intervention measures required

Mr. Gobé recalls the mess with the suspect package, containing 28 vials of unidentified chemicals, found at the Cartier metro station and transported without security in a car trunk to Montreal; as well as the recent train derailment in Saint-François, where the workers had to wait hours before knowing the contents of the train cars. “I will not take any risk with the safety of Laval residents, I will create a first responder service and a command center with a single leader who will trigger emergency measures. Nothing will be left to chance”, he said.

In conclusion, let us recall that Mr. Gobé is the only Laval mayoral candidate to make a strong commitment to the safety of the people of Laval and to make it a main theme of his campaign: “I will give back to Laval its peaceful character and make it the safest city in Quebec! “.
